Remembering the Iconic Lamborghini LM002

In the 1970s, Lamborghini was in the process of developing an SUV with cat-like reflexes - a super SUV of sorts that would still be capable of traversing rough, uneven, uncertain terrain. The SUV in question was to be named "Cheetah", and it was to be put to military use.

In the 1980s, the spirit of the "Cheetah" project resurfaced; It was 1981 when Fiulio Alfieri introduced the LM 001. This precursor to the LM002 was to have a rear-mounted engine, a unique feature for the time on such an SUV. Afterwards came the LMA prototype, which featured a more conventional engine up front.

In 1986, the Lamborghini LM002 debuted at the Brussels Auto Show. Featuring a V12 engine borrowed from the Countach Quattrovalvole, an aluminum and fiberglass body, four-wheel drive transmission, and more, this Lamborghini super SUV could traverse gradients of 120% and travel over 200 km/h. Three hundred of these exclusive Lamborghini SUVs were produced from 1986-1992.
