Lamborghini has begun using Forged Composites® in its production vehicles, after working on the development of the material since 2008.
Forged Composites® is the composite material of the future. Carbon fiber has many advantages in automotive construction, but it has limitations. Lamborghini and Callaway Golf have joined forces to take the concept of carbon fiber and transform it into something better, something with fewer restrictions.
Forged Composites® technology eliminates the weave of fibers. It uses loose, discontinuous fibers mixed with resin, and then with very high pressure, heat-presses the material into the desired mold. Instead of the fickle nature of carbon fiber, which is strong in one direction and brittle in the other, Forged Composites® is strong every which way.
Carbon fiber production time is measured in hours; Forged Composites® in minutes. The components are still relatively expensive, but cutting back the labor and setting time makes a significant difference in cost.
The freedom of design and integration combined with the shorter timeframe and lower cost make Forged Composites® an exciting revolution in automotive (and golf!) technology. The Huracán proves the efficacy of the technology and we can’t wait to see more of it.
